PHACE [ Subtitles / Virus / Renegade Hardware ]

Homebase: Düsseldorf

The duo known as Phace finds its roots in the very early days of German drum and bass history. Teaming up for music production at the turn of the millennium created the perfect channel for Florian and Nicolas to express their creative, exacting and musically obsessed minds. Aiming to create a new fusion of sounds and grooves they try to pair cold mathematical structures with slightly random and somewhat disturbing sounds. When you combine these elements, and then wrap it with a warm robe of distortion, you will get a quite good example of their trademark style. With an appreciation for late 90´s drum and bass, you can hear that a big part of these guys' music finds its roots there. However, with a deeper examination of their tracks, you can see that they find inspiration from any art form. They have successfully developed a unique sound, characterized by combining cutting edge funk and tech related elements, and by doing so, have stormed into the international scene focusing on their mission to spread deep and futuristic music. Considered creators of "disturbing funk", their music is in fact a style that is hard to pin down with words.

Being picked up from the Subtitles Recordings mastermind Teebee in 2004 propelled the recognition of Phace. His belief in their music, combined with his strong support motivated them to put 100% effort into their production. Their first release, Brainwave / Polymers (Subtitles 040) got heavy rotation from some of the scenes biggest names such as Ed Rush, Optical, Matrix, Teebee, Calyx, and Noisia. With the success of this release, it was clear to them that the time had come to further develop and shape their sound. The link between them and Subtitles strengthened, leading to more releases in 2005, including an EP entitled Now & Tomorrow (Subtitles 045) and another sick slice of funk, Hot Rock / Moore´s Law (Subtitles 047). Aside from Subtitles, they also released Dead Air (a collaboration with Noisia and Cause for Concern) on the sampler for Renegade Hardware's Guerrilla Warfare LP. Another track on this label, Lost is featured on the 2006 Carpe Diem LP. Apart from these major labels, Phace has also released tracks on Citrus, Full Force and Syndrome Recordings. The success of all these releases and with having just being signed to the mighty Virus Recordings for another collaboration with Noisia entitled Unveil (Virus 017), has pushed the production duo to the front of the scene. Locally, they gained further recognition in 2005 by being voted "best national producers" and "second best national DJ" within Germany´s very own Future Music DnB Awards.

A feature in the first issue of Knowledge magazine got this year kicked off to a roaring start for press coverage, and a title story in the Resident, the one and only Drum and Bass magazine for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, reinforced their newfound popularity. In international Drum and Bass online forums, threads devoted to Phace are consistently filled with praise and adoration for the production pair. Promoters are also starting to take note, with worldwide bookings lining up. Phace has played at high profile events like the Renegade Hardware party at London's legendary The End club, the Kings of the Jungle party series in Mannheim, and all across their homeland of Germany. They have also rocked dancefloors in Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Hungary, Holland and Italy and they have completed a second North American tour this year. In addition a first ever Australian tour is set for October.

As well as continuing to build their rigorous touring schedule, Phace has just announced completion of their debut LP for Subtitles, entitled PSYCHO, and scheduled for release in December or January '07. With global anticipation of this album's release and the plethora of shows lined up for 2006 it looks like Phace could well be the name to watch.

Are you ready to phace the funk?

CHRIS IMPULSE (.shadybrain / Berlin)

Homebase: Berlin

Chris Impulse aka Christian Hillemeyer is the head of the German D’n’B label shadybrain. He
has always has been hooked up with music, starting with classical piano lessons in his early
age and then with playing the guitar and composing music for different bands. In the mid
nineties, during a stay in the UK his attention was drawn onto Jungle. Chris was instantly
hooked to the unique vibe of bass and breaks. In 1996 he wanted to get active and started to
deejay. Due to his large passion for the German D’n’B scene he made lots of contacts to artists, crews and promoters and played at countless different events within the whole country and other european countries like Hungary, Poland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. In 1999 he decided to take his music to another level and started building up a studio and producing his own tunes. At the same time he started to study musicology and to set up
shadybrain (www.shadybrain.net) which first was a booking and event agency only. The shadybrain events featured national and international artists like Rascal + Klone, Pendulum, Mayhem, Steppa, Chris.SU, Phace, and Temper D., just to name a few. In the meantime shadybrain developed into a label and was actually the first D’n’B label to sell MP3s online.
Artists who have released on the label are Phace, Misanthrop, Pyro, Bad Robot, N.Phect&Dizplay, Dementia, Stare, and many more. Chris also works as a writer for german music and lifestyle magazine "level47" (www.level47.net) and Resident Magazine (www.resident.at).
Chris Impulse`s DJ-Sets always feature the highest amount of energy and the latest tunes around. Don`t miss this!

MIRROR

Homebase: Berlin
